Frequently Asked Questions

Permanent makeup also known as micro-pigmentatiion can be used by both men and women, and is often applied to areas such as eyebrows, eyes, lips and the scalp. Permanent makeup is a safe cosmetic application where high grade pigment is implanted into the superficial layer of the skin- the dermal layer. The reasons for permanent makeup are abundant and therefore the interest is growing rapidly amongst men and women. Permanent cosmetics is a fast and effective way to improve the way you look. It isn't about changing your features, but rather enhancing your natural beauty features while saving time in your daily routine and making life easier. Go for a run, swim, to the gym, play tennis, golf, shower or sweat, your makeup won't smudge or run off.  I use only the finest grade pigments and tools for each of my cosmetic procedures offered. The finished result is a natural look that lasts for years and helps you save time in your daily routine. Whether you want to add definition to facial features, or simplify your beauty routine, permanent makeup is an ideal solution for many.

Permanent makeup typicallly lasts 1-3 years, the average retention depends on many factors including skin type, lifestyle and pigments used.

  1. Skin type- Oily skin tends to absorb pigment at a slower rate than normal to dry skin, which can cause pigment to fade more quickly.
  2. Sun/UV exposure- Excessive or prolonged sun exposure without protection and SPF can cause pigment to fade at a faster rate in some cases.
  3. Use of retinoids and (AHA) Alpha Hydroxy Acids on or near the area the cosmetic procedure was done. These agents increase cellular turnover and therefore increase the potential of fading the pigment.
  4. Expect to need touchups! Just like hair, botox, filler or any other cosmetic service, cosmetic tattoo requires maintenance for your satisfaction and optimal, long lasting results.

No, PMU is not the same as traditional tattooing, this is largely due to the technique, tools and pigments used in PMU. For example traditional tattooists use different ink and larger needles to penetrate deep into the dermis, this is done because the artist wants their work to last forever. In PMU the most superficial layer between the epidermis and dermis is where the pigment is gently implanted. Needle size and proper technique ensure this. The epidermis is where cellular turnover is achieved and this is why the pigment will start to fade in a couple of years and need touch ups on an annual or bi-annual basis.

The Healing from cosmetic tattoo varies from person to person. With proper topical anesthetics and technique, swelling and bleeding should be minimal to none. I provide each client with an aftercare package and written instructions. The treated area will begin to soften/ lighten up within 3 to 10 days, it is recommended to schedule your touchup appointment anytime  between 6-8 weeks following your original treatment.  After that annual or  bi-annual touchups or per client preference and artist discretion.

The length of a session depends on the service you are receiving. A powder brow session can take 4 hours, scalp micropigmentation can take 2-5 hours, while a lip blushing session can take 3-5.

Permanent makeup is generally well tolerated by the majority of individuals however, pain is  very subjective and everyone has a different threshold. A topical numbing cream is applied to the area being treated throughout the procedure to reduce any discomfort. PMU uses very small needles to achieve the desired look, in turn it is much less invasive and creates less trauma to the dermis when compared to traditional tattoo. It is always my priority to make my clients feel comfortable and pain free throughout the entire service, most of my clients fall asleep.

Avoid caffeine including Tea, Coffee, Energy drinks, Soda, Alcoholic beverages, Multi-vitamins, Fish oil, Ibuprofen, Advil, Aspirin and any blood thinners. For the best results please have your fillers or botox injections done 3 weeks prior to your procedure. Avoid tanning beds/ UV exposure that leaves your skin compromised or sunburnt

  • Avoid facials 48 hours prior to the procedure

  • Avoid botox 48 hours prior to the procedure

  • If getting lip blushing and you have a history of coldsores, it is recommended to contact your healthcare provider and start acyclovir. I recommend starting at least three days before your appointment and continue for three days after the procedure to prevent a flair up.

  • If you have an active cold sore and are scheduled for lip blushing, please call Sarah. Your appointment will need to be rescheduled.

  • Discontinue use of Retin-A at least 2 weeks prior (and avoid on treated areas after).

  • Refrain from the use of any Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) products close to or on the treated area after the procedure.
